How to enable Find My iPhone

Why this matters

If your iPhone is lost or stolen, Find My lets you locate it on a map, play a sound, mark it as lost (which locks it remotely), or erase it. Activation Lock is the killer feature: once enabled, a thief can’t factory-reset and use your iPhone without your Apple ID and password — making stolen iPhones largely unfenceable.

Find My works even when the iPhone is offline, switched off, or factory-reset, by pinging its location through nearby Apple devices using the encrypted Find My network.

How to do it

  1. Open Settings[your name] at the top → Find My.
  2. Tap Find My iPhone → turn it on.
  3. Turn on Find My network (lets your iPhone be located even when offline).
  4. Turn on Send Last Location (sends a final location when battery is critically low).
  5. Verify by visiting icloud.com/find on another device — your iPhone should appear.

What you don’t need

You don’t need a third-party tracking app like Prey or Tile for your iPhone. Find My is more accurate, always-on, encrypted end-to-end, and free.

Verify it worked

Open icloud.com/find on another device and confirm your iPhone appears on the map.
