How to set up Android screen lock and Play Protect
Why this matters
A stolen Android phone is a thief’s quickest path to your photos, banking apps, saved passwords, and 2FA codes. A 4-digit PIN can be brute-forced; a 6-digit PIN or alphanumeric password is exponentially harder. Combined with Android’s automatic factory reset protection and Play Protect’s built-in malware scanning, you cover the realistic threat surface for free.
Play Protect runs in the background, scans every app you install (including sideloads), and is on by default — but third-party “performance booster” apps and old factory settings sometimes turn it off. A 60-second check confirms it’s actually running.
How to do it
Screen lock:
- Open Settings → Security & privacy → Device unlock → Screen lock.
- Choose PIN (6+ digits) or Password. Avoid Pattern — it’s easier to shoulder-surf and crack.
- Set the screen timeout to a short value (30 seconds to 1 minute) under Display → Screen timeout.
- Under Lock screen preferences, hide notification content so previews don’t show on the lock screen.
Play Protect:
- Open the Play Store app → tap your profile icon → Play Protect.
- Tap the gear icon. Confirm Scan apps with Play Protect is on.
- Tap Scan to run a one-time check of all installed apps.
Theft Detection (Android 15+):
Open Settings → Security & privacy → Theft protection and enable Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock. These automatically lock your phone if it’s grabbed from your hand or goes offline for too long.
What you don’t need
You don’t need a third-party antivirus app on Android. Play Protect handles the realistic threats, and most third-party AV apps add bloat, ads, and privacy risks of their own. If you only ever install apps from Google Play, your malware risk is already very low.
Open Settings → Security & privacy → Device unlock to confirm screen lock; open Play Store → profile → Play Protect to confirm it's on.
